I try not to read the Telegraph and then sound off a bit but today the vile squirming morally leprous person of William Bragg has been more than I can bear. His entire career has been one of posture and mummery and for the usual reasons. He is a professional Londoner (from Barking actually and not that badly off) and professionally working class( Never had a job in his life ). As his disappearingly small song writing and performing talent was never going to last more than for a month, he has augmented it by being a Dinky Toy lefty for the Press to play with. It’s the Cliff Richard`s trick except Cliff did Christians.

His earliest crime was to try and tame the gleeful amorality of Punk and cram bolshy right wingers like the nascent genius Paul Weller( boots not fit to lick ), into a PC straightjacket. The Jam were Conservative voters and their every instinct told them not to go along with the bourgeois left but their careers were in the hands of the brutally controlling media .They went native when they went up from Essex to London.

ISLINGTON Tory Paul Newman should have known that jokes on the internet can backfire.
Mr Newman, 42, maintains he was referring to his colleagues in Mildmay when he contributed what he thought was a witty riposte on a blog by national Tory pundit Iain Dale.
However, Islington Lib Dems seized on the comments.
Mr Newman, who works in insurance and is vice-chairman of Islington North Tories, wrote: “I have to confess that the denizens of Mildmay are almost bestially stupid. There is not a lot you can do with them… they live from roadkill and sleep under newspaper.”
He was, he says, referring not to the residents of the ward, but to his own political colleagues and their inability to deliver documents on time.
“I was having a laugh about my colleagues on a political website and the Lib Dems are trying to make something of it,” he said. “You would have thought they would have better things to do trying to run the council.”
Mildmay Lib Dem councillor Rhodri Jamieson-Ball took a different view. “It does not surprise me that the Tories haven’t got any councillors in Islington if they treat voters with this sort of contempt,” he said.
“The people of Mildmay are offended by these comments and I call on Mr Newman to apologise to them immediately, and, if he doesn’t, the national Conservative Party should discipline him.”
Councillor Lucy Watt, Lib Dem deputy leader of the council, added: “The Tory Party claim they are no longer the nasty party, but clearly nothing has changed. Senior members like Mr Newman are still making offensive remarks like this.
“The last time we heard from him he was arguing that Islington has too much council housing. Now he is insulting ordinary residents.”

I should demand that the Liberals offer a personal apology to me for their deceitful slurs on my reputation and by implication the Conservative Party in Islington. Actually ‘I am not bovvered ’, and rather I relish the prospect of continuing childishness. I suggest Ms. Watt sticks her tongue out at me when no-one is looking while Jameieson Balls flicks paper pellets at my ears . Both will be adding the lustre and dignity of the democratic process more than they usually do.
La Watt is correct about my views on excessive Council housing though.. With 50% of the Borough in Social housing and 70% of the inhabitants on benefits the social mix of Islington is dangerously skewed towards benefit dependency with its attendant evils of violent, crime drugs abuse , educational under achievement and family breakdown . With a shooting a week and some of the worst schools in the country it is no surprise that Emily Thorn berry ,Labour hypocrite of this Parish, agrees. She got her children into a nice school in Potters Bar .James Kempton also agrees having said that he “ Had no intention of letting Islington become 21st century slum”… under pressure fro Red Ken`s GLA. He has since rolled over like a soppy Spaniel and about 11000 more units are to be crammed into London’s most over crowded borough.
James Kempton told me at a meeting of the Islington Association that we needed to replace the stock lost to Leaseholders. Of course the whole point of right to buy was to encourage a greater proportion of ownership .This policy was working. Leaseholders have been a magnificent asset to the Borough and both of the real Political Parties are considering plans to return to the RTB agenda. Islington’s 11000 heroic leaseholders however ,are being treated shamefully. Already often suffering wicked levels of taxation they are being asked to pay Service Charges of up to £50,000 out of doctrinal spite. The good news is they will be given assistance in releasing equity . How kind , the mugger escorts you to the cash point to get the rest of your savings .
I have been working with Leaseholder representatives and next week we have a meeting with Michael Gove the Conservative shadow Housing minister. I do this for no reward of any kind but because I care about ordinary Islington people and try to help. Oh dear look what trouble I am in and this was all started by a friend of mine who I thought had cocked up the documentation so we did not compete in Mildmay ward. National Nuclear Day In Iran

I was just reading Croydonians magnificent spot on the nascent nuclear capability of the Congo. Frightening but fairly long term. The immediate concern is the prospect of a Nuclear Iran.
It was, “National Nuclear Day” a few days ago and we can dismiss the idea that their capabilities are for peaceful purposes as childish immediately . The recent kidnap shows how little Iran cares about international Law ,( whatever that is ) . I`m-a dinner-jacket will ,moreover, have been encouraged to believe that we are a decadent country of foppish bleeding hearts that would welcome the prospect of being annihilated for the crimes of the British Empire . At the very least they are more than welcome to kidnap our people with impunity.

If Iran`s claims that they are enriching Uranium on an industrial scale are true then they will have enough material for a bomb in 2009.This is a country where chants of “ Death to Israel” and “Death To America” count as dinner party chit chat so the prospect of nukes makes me go a little sweaty. In fact if someone were to take my ipod I might have to cry myself to sleep . It is just possible that the Iran are lying but we cannot put it all down to Arab jibber jabber . Even if Tehran is not as advanced as it claims to be they may still have the sufficiency between 2010 and 2015 so its about time we stopped prattling on about fat genes and Kate Middleton and started thinking about how to stay alive. More to the point its time that the world did the same .

The UN is an illusory power that cannot act in this case because of the interest of Russia and China . No meaningful sanctions have been deployed and that leaves Europe and America. As Iran relies on EU trade and that is backed with an export guarantee scheme it would be a simple matter to bring them to there knees. None of this would be any good without rights of inspection and we can all foresee the Liberals bleating on about the warmongering yanks and the Oil conspiracy ..or the Protocols of Zion or whatever it takes traitorously assist the enemies of the country. The West needs to get its fight face back on and quick. Tehran believes we are weak and their appetite for inspection brinkmanship will be ravenous come the day .Steadfastness of purpose will be required and cowards cannot be tolerated .

Apparently, her boss has offered to lend her his Caribbean mansion for "as long as she wants".

I would like to extend my sympathies at such hardship and express my admiration for Kate's incredible bravery.

Problem : Some BNP supporters are decent people

Lord dale of Blogland had a post up noting that the BNP were counselling their members to vote UKIP if they did not have a thug in situ . His clear intention was to smear UKIP by association with the Working Class Nationalist Party and electorally that makes plenty of sense . There is a considerable cross over between UKIP and the Consertvative Party but In a recent survey, 32% of Labour voters said they would vote BNP as second choice, only 12% of Conservative voters chose BNP as a second choice. In other words there is nothing in it for Les Bleus . I have always accepted this but I am still unhappy that the Conservative Party ignores its working class support . It is the Soul of the Party. I posted a couple of times expressing some ambivalence about the BNP and as I got quite a good response I am putting them up here . If only I could stop posting on other people sites I might get a half decent one together myself eh.

Personally I find them unrealistic but I do agree with much of what they say and if I thought they could win a good part of my objections would be gone. With the Break up of the Union now inevitable it is essential that resurgent Nationalism is not the preserve of racists and fascists . Most of the BNP`s votes come from people who are neither and I see it as up to the Conservative Party to seek a rapprochement with those who feel they are not heard. If I `m honest bellowing Caliban of the BNP in some ways appeals to me more than UKIP which cannot seems to make a simple case for self government without wanting to bring back the birch.

There is something rather unwholesome about this post and what I especially do not like is the implication that a whole swathe pf people are so disgusting that if they as much as mention your name they are tainted. Cameron should stop hugging hoodies are start understanding the BNP.

Iain you ask why the BNP would sympathise with UKIP when there policies are so different. I appreciate you have tried to stress the differences but asking the question carries a meaning of which you are well aware. Its not what you say its what they hear, and as a super sophisticated media savvy Westminster village mouse like you well knows I took you to have asked the “question “ knowingly. Political Parties out of power are not a sum of their professed polices or what they say they will be they are the sum of the members and supporters they are expressions of momentum in public life . You are implying there is a sympathy between supporters and members of these parties behind their policies and this is highly embarrassing to UKIP. That is what I took the point to be .
Perhaps I was mistaken but ( Jeremy) I did ,as always , think about what I posted. You ( Jeremy)think that vehemently opposing the BNP inoculates your views from the taint nationalism carries but I`m not sure how honest that (common) gambit is. There is a place for working class nationalism in this country and the Conservative Party have abandoned it . I just feel uncomfortable when the middle-classes talk of the BNP like lepers.I confess is not an entirely resolved disquiet but there it is .As far as their racism is concerned I have better reasons than most for fearing it.




So there you go . The BNP has some nasty people in it but I cannot forget that some decent people vote for it and I think the Conservative Party should try to understand why

I have hated the trade unions ever since they turned the lights out in the 70s but contemplating sycophantic “Professionals “ like La Flint , I have an almost misty eyed nostalgia for the blue collar warriors . At least they cared about someone and with real working-class people in the House the Conservatives were obliged to engage with life . Now we have one lot of tiresome nits playing media ping pong often indistinguishably ,each from the other. Politics has become playground for the shallow and the end of “explicit” Union power is part of this development.

Suprise Party For Catherine( Suprisingly Brilliant)

My cousin Catherine,to I and my siblings were close when we were young ,was 40 the other day . I find in beyond comprehension that she is so old but it appears her years have past at the same speed as mine. She is married to Lawrence ( Levi ) who has made a pile of wonga in the Computer Bod supply game , he supplies the Oil industry mostly and does like to spend with great generosity.

It was typical of him to arrange a surprise Party to which 90 people were invited fed and lavished with an endless free bar and entertainment. Now I had one of the best evenings I have had for ages . Partly because we were able to palm of the sprog on mum and actually gallivant out together but mostly it was the quality of the theme night singers . It sounds awful doesn’t it . A Vegas night with an Elvis impersonator , a Sinatra Impersonator show girls in a local Hotel . It should be dull and a gaudy disguise for pain and insecurity . In fact it was life affirming and wonderful. The Sinatra was unbelievably good and well….you are not short of top material are you and Elvis just kept delivering the best of the best. During “ My Dream” written for the 68 come back Bro Moi and Bro-in-law with others were all up there helping with the backward punching .Peter Kay territory may be but a slice of joy nonetheless . Quality...join if you will and feel free to assume the position ...........

Freedom and Slavery

The idea that the brutal legacy of the slave trade lives today in black Britain has some merit , but the implication of universality is incorrect. The third and fourth generations of West Indian families who went to the US and Canada in the 1950s are remarkably free from "the problems that afflict much of Britain's black population". They are for the most part educated income earners. Many are entrepreneurs and property owners.
One can only conclude that West Indian migrants to America were either of a different strain or that British society, its ethos and racism, is more virulently inhibiting of West Indian enterprise and creativity than it is in America. We are left to conclude that the problems of black people in Britain are not inherent in the West Indians or indeed, Africans, themselves; the problems have colonial origins to some extent but perhaps more importantly our culture of victim hood and infantilisation.
How dreadful for the bleeding hearts to discover they are actually harming black men and women. Isn`t it obvious though , they are the same as everyone else

"Last week ( writes Top Blogger Dale)I wrote on Comment is free that David Miliband should run against Gordon Brown for the Labour leadership. Many commenters took their lead from Talleyrand and pondered "what did he mean by that"?

Jackie Ashley then wrote a column claiming that the reason Tories like me were "talking up" Miliband is because we look at the great clunking fist of Gordon Brown and we're frit. Not for the first time, Jackie Ashley was talking nonsense. She may have great insights into the Labour Party but her knowledge of how the Tory mind works seems to diminish with every passing month.

I wrote my column on Miliband with no agenda. Frankly, I couldn't care less who Labour elects. As long as the man who has trounced us Tories three times in a row is despatched I don't care who succeeds him. The truth is, people may not like Blair but they see him as a better prime minister than Gordon Brown or any other putative Labour successor. So the sooner Blair goes, the happier I, as a Tory, will be.

Anyway, back to the point of this article. Stories appeared in the press yesterday that the Conservatives have set up an "anti-Miliband unit". Acres of newsprint were devoted to this revelation. It shouldn't have merited an inch of space. All political parties have a political unit which examines the utterances of top level politicians in other parties. Someone inside the Conservative party may well have been deputed to draw up a dossier on Miliband - there would have been a dereliction of duty if they hadn't. But for this to become a major story shows how bereft of imagination many of our political reporters have become.

Let me make clear, given the choice of Brown or Miliband as Labour leader I'd take Brown every time. The British people have made up their minds about Gordon Brown. They don't like him and after last week's budget their respect for him has diminished too. If Miliband challenged him, it would draw him out and maybe we might actually have some proper debate about the future of both the Labour Party and the country. Miliband's "I-can" article in this week's New Statesman says more about the future than Gordon Brown has said in 10 years. If I were a Brown supporter I'd be worried about why my candidate couldn't articulate such thoughts as well."

. For some crimes justice will be served by no other means than the Death Penalty. It is not a matter of a strict balancing of the scales . I do not suggest we torture Rose West for years and then kill her ( which she deserves ) ,but rather a sacramental act showing that Society loves the departed ,not just the convenience of those who remain. There are problems of course .The most serious is perhaps the damage done to the executioner and the rest of us who by proxy We will become like Hamlet “The deeds creature “, dehumanised.
I think not .It is unpleasant for a soldier to kill, (ideally), but it is his duty . So is it ours to bear this burden , and the huge expence by the way. The problem of a miscarriage of justice is reasonable although exaggerated ,and non existent for the few cases I have in mind . There are about 40 people on real life sentences at the moment.They should all be dead for what they have done.

I don`t know that Bradley Tucker (the petty criminal who shot Peter Woodahams shoule be one of these , but lets at least make the victim a person.

The Ages of Drinking

I had a bit of a messy evening on Friday , one of those occasions when you really are not sure if you behaved unforgivably badly or not . The best I can say is that I think I got away with it . On Saturday I felt old .In pleasant melancholy I constructed the whimsy that ones life is marked with period of alcohol enhanced reality , they lubricate transitions from one age to another. Is this why on so many occasions I have read the name Armitage Shanks ,wobbling gently from one foot to another .

The first drink I can remember was at Christmas . It is another time and another me , my Auntie Gwen was still alive and we were all at there semi in St. Albans . I must have been seven or eight . My father was still ascending at Lloyds and all my cousins were around with their gifts and the gaudiest baubled tree in the word . Its long echoey tunnel to such a memory and it may not comeback to me as it was . I think , I had a snowball and I thought it wonderful .There were glowing faces laughing at me getting it up my nose, and I was a full or bubbles as the sweet drink I lapped like puppy. To think that was thirty five years ago if. . There is always something of a hermetically sealed quality to any Christmas ;its almost out of time .
Then some years later we are in the Elephant and Castle . near Wheat Hampstead in Hertfordshire and I must have been thirteen or so . My father , brother and I are in the garden and dad has quietly bought me a beer. I disliked the taste . I couldn’t see the point of it at all , it was bitter and tasted , if of anything , like rust . .I said something like ,“ Why does everyone like drinking this so much I mean , it doesn’t taste nice at all,”. My father assured me that I would come round to the idea.
Do we always remember our youth as full of sunshine ? I remember gold and green and half closing my eyes so I could almost look straight at the sun and feeling its heat on my face
At sixteen I was not exactly a hardened drinker but I was getting there . There were seven or eight of us and we had been to the civic disco and then rushed around the Town getting drunker and drunker. There was a sort of uncaring lust for experience ,that drove everyone on and the game became who could go the furthest . I wasn’t the ring leader and in fact I was slightly an outsider ..somewhat un-cool , so I had to go as far as anyone . I smashed a few windows with the others ,and after each adventure on someone’s part ,the shout would go up “Run Away “,… “ Run Away” which got funnier and funnier. We were running and shouting so hard that the sweat was a sheen my face and the streets were like dark rivers you just had to thrown yourself into .What would a party of indestructible gods do next but run along the roofs of a street of cars. Then the Police van pulled up alongside us
A few months later we were handed fines at juvenile court which our parents were obliged to pay. By the time I met the rest for a meeting with our Solicitor I had already been expelled from school and we all laughed about that as well. There is always laughing when you are drinking isn’t there .
I was at University and in uncontrollable lust with a girl called Phillipa . . I had a car that I had persuaded my mother to lend me ,and the two of us went to stay in a B and B in Cirencester . It was sunny again and we spent a lot of time in the chocolate box hills , and a lot of time inside . I drove to a club from which I emerged from so drunk that I could not see .Trying to get back there were three roads at any point I might choose to take and the police spotted me because I was on the pavement going to wrong way up a one way street at about three miles an hour . By this time I was onto spirits and I was literally fighting drunk in the Police station I could only think of Philipa who , it turned out ,was only seeing me to make someone else jealous . …I felt so lost when I found out ,I was sick for weeks , actually physically sick . Imagine loving someone like that ,just someone you liked the look of ....strange

In my thirties , I was in the City and had been there for a while . I had already been married once and this me has little in common with the student of the child . We went to the Capricorn where “ Business’” is transacted between men and women . My boss came over and said ,” Look I’ve got four girls come on lets go“.I have never been keen on prostitutes The truth is , I am terrified of catching anything , and at that time AIDS was much in the news .. Still along I went and I was left with one of the girls ,a leggy African woman about twenty who pulled my suit off as I collapsed on the bed . We had been drinking solidly for about twelve hours and as I look around I hardly recognised myself or the world .There had been was smiles and flickering lights in a dark warm places and here I was on a small white bed in room with the wallpaper coming off . I think I was sobering up …and in any case had little interest in the girl . I suddenly decided to go home . She was so mad she threw my shoes out window and chased me into the street hitting me with a stiletto . It was raining and in my socks I learnt the meaning of the word scamper.

Then there as the time my wife and I went to Windsor and spent the afternoon writing our novel and planning what we would do with the money. Or in Harry’s bar in Paris feeling cool or even the night when we met in The East India Fenchurch Street.

I `m lucky really , I haven’t come to irretrievable harm, although it has been close and I can’t honestly say I would have missed it all. For all the dangers and delusive euphoria there is a truth in drunkenness and to this day I find it hard to trust a man who doesn’t drink. What could he really know about anything . To be a young man and alive and laughing at everything is worth a lot.As a frienf of mine use to say

" Are you here for a good time ..or just a long time ! "
