1945 Thursday July 5th Polling Day

I found a time capsule ,an election leaflet for the 1945 General Election. In it ,Captain Cunningham Reid makes a strong case for re-election as an ‘Independent’ Conservative. Sadly I have not as yet discovered if he was successful. There was a political paradigm shift in 1945 and we are still suffering the consequences of anachronistic loyalty to the ideals that brought Labour to power. Churchill wasn’t finished ,as people forget ,but we drifted left until Margaret Thatcher turned the ship . Much of what the Captain says has a resonance for us today but the adorable ‘word’ from Mrs CR to the women is so of its time .
. I hope you can make out the picture of domestic bliss as well . Aren’t they stylish and doesn’t his wife look terrific in that Spartan but shapely outfit? I have marked some of the parts which had an especially contemporary echo but what I chiefly wanted to draw attention to is the sense of a nation deciding its destiny .There are few “ Big visions “ but more a ‘conversation’ about real problems .The unquestioned assumption is of a “We” and a right to decide. This is what we are losing .Hatfield Girl is daily striking a terrible chord of rage expressed as detached analysis of the constitutional desecration quietly happening around us everyday .I agree with her and partly I mean this as an elegiac comment on all we have lost as a country and a democracy Now lets go back to July 1945.…….

Remember the years that Churchill himself showed commendable political independence and has he not indicated that he still appreciates the value independents by his recent declaration that in the new Parliament he would call upon men of all Parties and no parties to support him ? If at this election he was not tied by party leadership he would no doubt be recommending electors to vote for go ahead Independent conservatives rather than Party yes-men.
The 22 Independents in the last parliament did invaluable work it was because I was an independent in 1941 that I was bale to start an outcry in Parliament which resulted unimproved pay and allowances for those in the forces. Subsequently I obtained for them the right when on leave to take part in politics and so to have some say in what they are fighting for . My independence also enabled me to fight hard to ensure that that service folk shall not be let down as they were after the last war and that service men and women shall; have housing and reasonable security from unemployment: and to urge that in order to save our children from being sacrificed in a third world war the German nation must be divided up between the surrounding countries.
I am in favour of the proposed social legislation resulting form the Bevridge report , with the exception of that part which deals with health. I shall oppose the health proposals in their present form, for not only are they prejudicial to the dental and medical professions but there is no assurance of an adequate improvement of pay and conditions for nurses and above all the public will if the present go through , be forced to pay , in many instances for second rate medical and dental attention…………..
Considering that this is one of the richest Boroughs in London, it is disgraceful that in some quarters there should be such deplorable housing conditions. This is largely the responsibility of the Town hall crowd but in future whether those reactionary Councillors and Aldermen like it or not , given the opportunity I am going to make it my responsibility . My wife and I have many of our friends among the less fortunate members of the community and are determined to do everything humanly possible to obtain for all Marylebone folk decent homes with modern conveniences. The lack of accommodation in the area has been aggravated by the influx of refugees. I shall use my best endeavours to find a satisfactory and just solution to this problem, always remembering that the interest if the British people must be paramount.
I am an enemy of landlords who charge extortionate rents for houses , flats or rooms .
The racket in clothing and footwear must also be stopped.
The whole problem with our politics today is that , though there must be political parties , the system which governs all three old Parties has got right out of hand , and most MP no longer represent their voters but their Party bosses who in turn represent selfish interests.
Uninfluenced by the power of the Party machine , political promotion or honours , I have , as you no doubt have observed, taken the gloves off in parliament and fought for what I considered to be the best for my country and constituents .
Will you allow me to carry on for you by honouring me with your vote next Thursday July the 5th

A Word From Mrs Cunningham-Reid to the Women of Marylebone
Many of you have known my husband for the fourteen years he has been our MP. I have known him only five years - in fact since I started war -work in Marylebone. At first in use to wonder why he spent so much time on politics . Taking the independent line he has he could certainly look for no no personal advantage in it - only plenty of grey hairs.
Why - why -why? I have asked myself . He has a comfortable home ;three boys to whom he is devoted ( including our three month old baby son ) and the means to indulge occupations he is interested in; yet he spends all his time fighting in Parliament against tremendous odds , writing political books and apparently getting no reward but plenty of derision from those high places. Why does he continue in Politics ?
I know now . The answer is simple and it makes me proud of him. He has a burning desire to use his abilities and resources to help his fellow human beings. In the House of Commons he refuses just to be toll to promote Party interests. Only one thing guides him . Is it in the best interests of those he represents ?…..
..he has fought for generous pensions for disabled and for the dependents of those who have been killed; for the 5/- children’s allowance to be paid to the mother; for Service men’s children not to be penalised; for increased Old Age pension; and for spinsters to get pensions at 55.
Yes my husband has fought for all of this and more . Won’t you help the man who has helped you , and wants to go on helping you? Make certain he is able to continue the god work he has set his heart on by voting for him on July 5th.

Its easy to go off on a Libertarian shtick about guns but its all rubbish really , no sensible person wants US availability here. Their history is entirely different and as Conservatives we should respect that things are often as they are for good reason and moving one element may misunderstand the whole structure.

Scotland was vastly more violent as usual with 93 deaths bringing the total to 859 (.Tells you all you need to know about the odious Pictish horde.) Anyway the average is about two or three day and the risk could be called 15 per million per year.
In America 17000 deaths violent deaths in 2005 suggesting 46 deaths per day and this equates to 50 in every million per year. The old answer is that guns do not kill ,people do. Maybe, but it’s a bloody sight easier if you have a gun and I dread to think what would happen in the estates of London if there was ever any Liberalisation of gun laws. It is a culturally specific thing as we know from Switzerland but our culture would be struck down the way gin struck the Victorian Working classes.

There is no end to the argument from personal safety and the risks from passive smoking are far less than those from passive drinking. Bar staff are not in a dangerous environment compared to most and there is no reason whatsoever for the Government to stick its snuffling snout in where it is decidedly not required. BNP Broadcast Censored

BBC Wales has forced the British National party to change a party election broadcast to be shown tonight. The BBC confirmed its lawyers insisted the BNP make certain changes to their broadcast, but refused to discuss details. Unite Against Fascism urged the BBC to stop any broadcast going ahead. Theoretically they can only do so on the grounds that it is obscene or offensive but the phalanx of objectors are instructive as to the real problem.
North Wales police, Richard Brunstrom, who is described as the "most politically correct cop in the country". Has loudly complained and he has been under fire from the BNP Media unions not only approve but have called for a review of the policy to allow the far right party any platform at all. On the own hand there is the growth of soft funding. This is when a Party is subject to rules but a separate body that is supportive of a given Party like Doughty Street can be financed without any limit
It is going to be exceedingly hard to control moneys swilling around this nebulous terrain .A recipe for graft and the PR companies are bound to use the loophole to please important contacts . George Walden noted they are all part of an elite nexus anyway that constitute the new Establishment. At local level the standards board would be having apoplexy.

PR and the Constitutional and societal debate of Politics are becoming confused . Focus group lead policy and even legislation have cursed the Blair years and the malign influence of a Hilton or Campbell is the Evil Grand Vizier to every handsome Prince .
If PR, marketing and their attendant evils of amoral follower-ship have seeped into the polity then I fear an equally grave problem is money that seeps out of the Public purse into the hands of the PR gurus . As before it is not quite straightforward sinecures but rather related income streams .

I`ve got a certain amount of sympathy for the frustration but I think there are a lot of things to try first like making teachers work for a living and improving the social mix all of which I have discussed at length in my long boring way.. Mr Newman, 42, maintains he was referring to his colleagues in Mildmay when he contributed what he thought was a witty riposte on a blog by national Tory pundit Iain Dale.
However, Islington Lib Dems seized on the comments.

He was, he says, referring not to the residents of the ward, but to his own political colleagues and their inability to deliver documents on time.
“I was having a laugh about my colleagues on a political website and the Lib Dems are trying to make something of it,” he said. “You would have thought they would have better things to do trying to run the council.”
Mildmay Lib Dem councillor Rhodri Jamieson-Ball took a different view. “It does not surprise me that the Tories haven’t got any councillors in Islington if they treat voters with this sort of contempt,” he said.
“The people of Mildmay are offended by these comments and I call on Mr Newman to apologise to them immediately, and, if he doesn’t, the national Conservative Party should discipline him.”
Councillor Lucy Watt, Lib Dem deputy leader of the council, added: “The Tory Party claim they are no longer the nasty party, but clearly nothing has changed. Senior members like Mr Newman are still making offensive remarks like this.

My remarks were unmistakably humorous and intended only to tease the Mildmay team in the knock about context they were made. With 50% of the Borough in Social housing and 70% of the inhabitants on benefits the social mix of Islington is dangerously skewed towards benefit dependency with its attendant evils of violent, crime drugs abuse , educational under achievement and family breakdown . With a shooting a week and some of the worst schools in the country it is no surprise that Emily Thorn berry ,Labour hypocrite of this Parish, agrees. She got her children into a nice school in Potters Bar .James Kempton also agrees having said that he “ Had no intention of letting Islington become 21st century slum”… under pressure fro Red Ken`s GLA. He has since rolled over like a soppy Spaniel and about 11000 more units are to be crammed into London’s most over crowded borough.
James Kempton told me at a meeting of the Islington Association that we needed to replace the stock lost to Leaseholders. Of course the whole point of right to buy was to encourage a greater proportion of ownership .This policy was working. Leaseholders have been a magnificent asset to the Borough and both of the real Political Parties are considering plans to return to the RTB agenda. National Nuclear Day In Iran

I was just reading Croydonians magnificent spot on the nascent nuclear capability of the Congo. Frightening but fairly long term. The immediate concern is the prospect of a Nuclear Iran.
It was, “National Nuclear Day” a few days ago and we can dismiss the idea that their capabilities are for peaceful purposes as childish immediately . The recent kidnap shows how little Iran cares about international Law ,( whatever that is ) . I`m-a dinner-jacket will ,moreover, have been encouraged to believe that we are a decadent country of foppish bleeding hearts that would welcome the prospect of being annihilated for the crimes of the British Empire . At the very least they are more than welcome to kidnap our people with impunity.

If Iran`s claims that they are enriching Uranium on an industrial scale are true then they will have enough material for a bomb in 2009.This is a country where chants of “ Death to Israel” and “Death To America” count as dinner party chit chat so the prospect of nukes makes me go a little sweaty. In fact if someone were to take my ipod I might have to cry myself to sleep . It is just possible that the Iran are lying but we cannot put it all down to Arab jibber jabber . Even if Tehran is not as advanced as it claims to be they may still have the sufficiency between 2010 and 2015 so its about time we stopped prattling on about fat genes and Kate Middleton and started thinking about how to stay alive. More to the point its time that the world did the same .

I would like to extend my sympathies at such hardship and express my admiration for Kate's incredible bravery.

Problem : Some BNP supporters are decent people

Lord dale of Blogland had a post up noting that the BNP were counselling their members to vote UKIP if they did not have a thug in situ . His clear intention was to smear UKIP by association with the Working Class Nationalist Party and electorally that makes plenty of sense . There is a considerable cross over between UKIP and the Consertvative Party but In a recent survey, 32% of Labour voters said they would vote BNP as second choice, only 12% of Conservative voters chose BNP as a second choice. In other words there is nothing in it for Les Bleus . I have always accepted this but I am still unhappy that the Conservative Party ignores its working class support . It is the Soul of the Party. I posted a couple of times expressing some ambivalence about the BNP and as I got quite a good response I am putting them up here . If only I could stop posting on other people sites I might get a half decent one together myself eh.

I see UKIP certainly and possibly the BNP is it develops away from its unacceptable genesis , as allies of the Conservative Party . In this context its isn`t hard to see that there would be a cross pollination and the truth is there are equally points of agreement with the Conservatives as you know .

With the Break up of the Union now inevitable it is essential that resurgent Nationalism is not the preserve of racists and fascists . Most of the BNP`s votes come from people who are neither and I see it as up to the Conservative Party to seek a rapprochement with those who feel they are not heard. If I `m honest bellowing Caliban of the BNP in some ways appeals to me more than UKIP which cannot seems to make a simple case for self government without wanting to bring back the birch.

There is something rather unwholesome about this post and what I especially do not like is the implication that a whole swathe pf people are so disgusting that if they as much as mention your name they are tainted. Cameron should stop hugging hoodies are start understanding the BNP.

Iain you ask why the BNP would sympathise with UKIP when there policies are so different. I appreciate you have tried to stress the differences but asking the question carries a meaning of which you are well aware. Its not what you say its what they hear, and as a super sophisticated media savvy Westminster village mouse like you well knows I took you to have asked the “question “ knowingly. Political Parties out of power are not a sum of their professed polices or what they say they will be they are the sum of the members and supporters they are expressions of momentum in public life . You are implying there is a sympathy between supporters and members of these parties behind their policies and this is highly embarrassing to UKIP. That is what I took the point to be .
Perhaps I was mistaken but ( Jeremy) I did ,as always , think about what I posted. You ( Jeremy)think that vehemently opposing the BNP inoculates your views from the taint nationalism carries but I`m not sure how honest that (common) gambit is. There is a place for working class nationalism in this country and the Conservative Party have abandoned it . I just feel uncomfortable when the middle-classes talk of the BNP like lepers.I confess is not an entirely resolved disquiet but there it is .As far as their racism is concerned I have better reasons than most for fearing it.




So there you go . The BNP has some nasty people in it but I cannot forget that some decent people vote for it and I think the Conservative Party should try to understand why
