Because I have loved life......

Because I have loved life, I shall have no sorrow to die ( Amelai Burr) and life is easy to love on a sunny day
When the fat cat headline refers to our over- fed felines( again) we know the Summer holidays are well and truly with us and the news is a thin gruel you can just about live on . I’m having a little break from politics and taking gentle meander by the scenic route
How delightful it is that Hitler after a hard day’s genocide would relax , no doubt with a bagel , and listen to Jewish composers (revealed today). Andy Warhol whose retrospective in Edinburgh I would love to see filled his flat with Italian Renaissance work .Hypocrite? No I don’t think so .Architects of the 60s blighted the urban landscape with hideous modernity and lived in delightful Georgian splendour in Surrey but I see Andy Warhol as better than that. He shared the ambition of the masters in a different time like TS Eliot , a modern poet intensely concerned with tradition . Conservatism like art and poetry looks to the past but it does not copy it .

What is the distinctive modern art. Well amongst other things it is the ubiquitous tattoo. I laughed like a drain at the picture of someone who had CHOISE misspelt on his back in large black letters. My father had a tattoo from his days in the army . It said “ La donna e mobile. Femme change souvent” how true ... By the time I saw it ,it had a fascinating weather beaten patina and was cool . They don’t all age so well thought and when I was trying to think of a good subject for a tribal marking of my own there was nothing I felt I could live with. Davina Mcall tells us she is going to get another tattoo at 40 she “already has alien on her bottom “ . If she had “desperate “ on her forehead it might be apposite.

I `m glad I resisted the urge its so final , as if you could sum up everything about yourself in a word of a symbol. The time for that of there is a time is on the gravestone and the one I like the one I saw recently. It was simple and I would be happy to remembered this way

“ He was such fun”

What would be your epitaph?

Oh, wow, I want to see Warhol's retrospective. If you go newmania, a report please - and keep your eyes skinned for Lou Reed and any other members of the Velvet Underground, my daughter and I are massive fans of theirs - and Warhol's factory.

'Andy it's me, I haven't seen you in a while...

I really miss you
I really miss your mind
I haven't heard ideas like that in such along long time...

I'm sorry that I doubted your good heart
Things always seem to end before they start...'

I'm not going to do an epitaph, but I have to admit I quite like the brutalist architecture of the 60s and 70s.

Shame the buildings often caused such social problems.

Also quite fancy Dylan Thomas's:

And death shall have no dominion.

Spike Milligan had a great epitaph: "told you I was sick". Top-notch.

My epitaph? It's got to have a God-botherer slant, and a bit of my personality coming through too.

"She's not dead
She's only sleeping
So why the fuck
are you all weeping?"

No surprise there, since one of the obscene characteristics of humanity's most appalling dictatorships and evil Empires is a great flowering of culture alongside their near satanic brutality. So often that culture would be stolen from, financed at massive human cost to, or generated by, invaded or conquered nations or societies.

The Romans, the Normans, the Ancient Greeks, the British, the Spaniards, The Portuguese, the Germans, the Australians, the Americans and, more recently, the Scots Mafia, to name just a few of these dictatorships...were just part of an endless procession of nations or elitist national groups that lived parasitically off of other nations, enriching not just their treasury but their culture in the process - and forcing a vile, self serving, hegemonic culture on the masses the preyed on .

Of course I'm not drawing any sort of satanic parallel between the Nazis and all of the others, in terms of the modernity of the Nazis unthinkable brutality. Yet there is surely one defining characteristic which all of the above had in common: slave labour. And wasn't it that slave labour and organised theft on the basis of it which gave rise to the great flowering of culture in these nations/ elitist groups?

As most of the ancestors of the English were rural labourers who were themselves as good as slaves, I'm not in any sense suggesting that England - or Britain, if it still exists - should apologise for slavery, indeed, far from it, since very few of us or our ancestors benefited from colonial slavery.

What I am suggesting is that we English need a grass roots rebellion against nulab, our colonial oppressors, one which embodies an awareness of the true extent to which they've massively enriched themselves and impoverished us by parasitically enslaving us.

One problem with the tactics of our parliamentary opposition is surely that seems to be no really joined up, cohesive or consolidated analysis or awareness of this.

To beat nulab's crushing hegemony, don't we need to do as the early Labour did: first analyse it, understand how it operates and the extent to which it enslaves us?

Anonymous said...

In short, we English need a Conservative Marx to theorise a systematic and compelling deconstruction of nulab.

Woops! Sorry, forgot to put my name on the previous post
