Australians Value Their Culture ( Sorry did I mishear …?)

This is a bit out of date but I had nowhere to put it at the time. Well covered by other bloggers , I `m afraid, but the speech was sent to me in the office

Australia lost its Temper

Everyone except the Conservative Party has been talking about immigration recently . Ruth Kelly demanded an end to political correctness supported by John Reid in a volte face of truly breathtaking cheek so I think we might risk a further word or two
One of the reasons that the subject out in the open is that the most visible form of migration is form Eastern Europe which makes it `not racist ` apparently to wonder where they will all live . Migration watch has warned that this fuss is misplaced and a distraction from the real problem which emanates from Asia and Africa, very true, and the fact that so many of the English are leaving is another more important concern . Business interests are overwhelmingly in favour of cheap skills possibly at the expense of domestic wages and even Poly Toynbee the high Priestess of Liberal cant has worried that immigration is hurting the poor . Sir Trevor Phillips has told British Muslims that if they want Sharia law they had better move so we can hardly move for political cross dressing.

Beneath the surface the email storm of Australian PM John Howard’s comments shows that darker forces are stirring. I `ll quote one of the milder passages …`this culture (Culture? this is Australia we are talking about?) has been developed over two centuries of struggles, trials and victories by millions of men and women who have sought freedom. We speak mainly ENGLISH, not Spanish, Lebanese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Russian, or any other language. Therefore, if you wish to become part of our society, learn the language! `

We need a sense of balance here but reasonable people are becoming a little tired of apologising for our own nationality.
Naturally we will express ourselves more politely than the colonies.
