A new YouGov poll reported in the Sunday Times this morning has, with changes on the last survey by the pollster nearly a fortnight ago CON 40% (-3): LAB 35% (+4): LD 15% (-1). This looks like bad news for David Cameron with Brown`s travails forgotten over the holiday period but any poll at such a time must be suspect until proved otherwise. With the likeliest result of the GE a close or hung Parliament the closeness of the Liberal Party to the thoroughly illiberal Brown is worth noting .As I have been predicting for a long time there are talks planned on Constitutional reform between Nick Clegg and Gordon Brown. The bottom line with the Liberals is this . Clegg may talk like a Heathite Tory but his Party can barely put up with it as we saw from quasi socialist Huhne`s strong showing .Clegg knows he may be able to do a deal for power and the only Party his troops will allow him to deal with is Labour but the votes he needs are all wavering Conservatives .The trick he has to pull off is to persuade Conservative voters that a vote Liberal is not a vote to keep Brown when much as he may regret it that is all it can ever be and every Liberal candidate who pretends otherwise is lying through his or her teeth.
They dream of abandoning directly elected MPs and sitting in the Palace of Westminster holding the strings like a spider at the centre of an elitist web of placemen. They lie about their true nature and behave with noticeably less transparency than either of the main Parties .With the economy looking rocky next year and the Scottish problem growing in significance I do not expect a few calculating insiders to have the last say in our future whatever cunning deals they do

Always know when the YouGov poll is going to produce an inflated result for Broon as I don't receive a copy of the survey. Sure enough, I didn't get one this month. Mighty odd that.
Clegg's first problem is that his true Liberals tend be 40 pluses who don't like inept and shallow pretty boys with no bl**dy experience of anything much under their belt. His second problem is that we don't trust him because he's far, far too evocative of Teflon Tony and the whole nation will be smarting from the Teflon effect for too many years to come.
Although Cameron overcame a similar hurdle, I don't believe Clegg has the clout - authenticity, authority or charisma - to pull it off.
I `m not convinced by Clegg but I think his weakness in his own Party is his main problem rather than his pesonal failings.I am under the impression thee are also young Liberakls interted in being 'Liberal'.
Wjay frustrates me is that Liberals are often very active locally and interested in Comunity as am I.
At a national level however they support Polcies which are quite against such communitarian instincts
I will be happy to see the Lib Dems team up with the washed up NuLabs as I think it will concentrate the minds of the voters as to the real choice. I think a deal with the Conservatives would be a disaster for those of us who think the European problem is more than a little out of hand.

Not enough to sustain a decent right of centre in the party because we're all switching support to Cameron.
Another reason I don't accept the result of this YouGoc poll is the result of the very recent by election in - highly marginal - Harlow. Two wards were up for grabs, both labour, one (a labour stronghold for years) returned a Conservative, the other almost did.
Roll over and cry, Broon, because even Harlow says your time is up.

Yep, I think you're right, Mrs S, no one except a few left wing nutters in the LibDems wants the disaster of another Lib-Lab pact.
One thing that bugs me, n, is why Cameron isn't covertly signalling to the 12-13 million smokers' vote that he will counter the discrimination against us by allowing smoker's pubs or ventilated rooms in pubs and smoking in our own cars.
Few politicians seem to be aware of the huge amount of seething resentment among smokers over these anti-smoker measures. Every time I walk outside of my office for a fag, I stand among a group of, usually unknown, others in what has become the freezing smoking community - all of us seething with rage and hatred of the politicians (all of them) who've turned us into lepers.
There have to be millions of untapped votes out there for any party which secretly signals a more equitable approach. The smokers' vote could be enough to ensure a landslide victory for the Conservatives.
Yet the problem is that as long as politicians continue to buy their duty free fags in Westminster and smoke them in their four, warm and cosy smokers' rooms there, we smokers will identify all politicians as the enemy.
Auntie Flo'
by allowing smoker's pubs or ventilated rooms in pubs and smoking in our own cars.
Its odd you say that Flo because I feel like I am the only one who still looks at the end of the pub with utter disbelief. I cannot believe they ahve done it.... There is no health risk except to yourself and there is almost no-one who supports this draconian measure including non smokers .
Working men`s clubs closing its an appalling law
The sort of compromise you suggest was available
What Mrs S says.
Happy new year honey x
If the Lib Dems actually stood for liberal democracy then they could win the election outright. Why Cameron isn't being a bit more liberal I don't know. There are lots of disillusioned liberal-minded voters out there who don't have anywhere to turn because Labour have gone draconian and the LibDems have gone Euro-Social-Democratic and the Tories aren't banging the freedom drum hard enough.
Come on Cameron, 2010 is there for the taking.
What Auntie Flo said. The ban on smoking (which "they" are apparently talking about extending even further into private property and private life) has bewildered me about WHAT HAS HAPPENED to my fellow countrymen, that some of them could even think of passing the legislation, and the rest give in so completely without a struggle. It is a real mystery.
LBS...I completely share your bewilderment
Mark and Mrs. Sit has occurred to me that a Conservative Liberal Pact would essentially be klike having the old Heathites back or to go back further like having the Peelites re-combined with the rural Tories.
They have to compromise on Europe , we cannot go on selling the country out.
Oh dear! what a horrible thought. I'm putting you on the naughty step for mentioning that man's name.
And happy new year Flo x
and a happy new year all :-)
Ps: can't say I'm a Clegg fan either - so that means I don't like Cameron or Clegg or Brown, hmph. Politics is dead.
You could always be a green P they don`t have a leader
Be a green N? Aren't they full of vegetarians? I'd be tempted to tell them that lettuce screams when you cut it.
Anyway I want to vote for Ed and am just waiting for him to take over my constituency.
Not sure Ed isn`t a bit too independent minded to be an MP.
Newmania that is the nicest thing you've ever said about me :-)
Happy New Year
There is no health risk except to yourself and there is almost no-one who supports this draconian measure including non smokers . (newmania)
Exactly. How dare Brown demonise and criminalise hard working people who smoke. Millions of us are sick of it and bl**dy furious with the old b*astard for this.
He's denying smokers full NHS care too, yet we pay £9 billion extra tax for that care. It makes my blood boil!
Why is it government blue skies for tax subsidised, lung and environment damaging, balance of payments deficit bound aviation yet the incinerator for tax generating smokers?
We're not asking for the right to blow smoke up everyone's nostrils, we just demand to be treated as humans with equal rights. Our particular poison is no more damaging than alcohol, car or aviation fumes.
Cameron needs to wake up to this route to working people's votes. It would also be proof that he means to keep his promise of less government control and more independence and self reliance.
12 million smokers, David Cameron means many millions of votes for you if you decriminalise us.
Auntie Flo'
Happy New Year to you too, Philipa - and newmania and everyone else!
Did newmania say that you have a website, Philipa? If so, can I have a link to it?
Sorry, that last anon happy new year was from me.
From the BBC's Have Your Say topic on Gordon Brown's priorities:
"I would just like to say that I think Gordon Brown is doing a very good job indeed. The economy is on course, he has got a grip on crime and punishment and immigration and ... nurse, my medicine seems to be wearing off."
Comments on the BBC's website still seem to be running at about 90:1 in favour of Broon's resignation and an election. Eat your questionnaires, YouGov.
Auntie Flo'
