The All Blacks Are Coming

The government is holding talks with a leading black pressure group to see whether any future change in the law to let parties choose parliamentary candidates from shortlists made up entirely of ethnic-minority candidates could work in practice, Harriet Harman, Labour’s deputy leader, said yesterday.
After Ms Harman, also secretary of state for equalities revealed to conference that she had called in Operation Black Vote, its director, Simon Woolley, welcomed the move as necessary and urgent. The Conservatives had a better record in recent months than Labour in getting ethnic minority candidates into safe or winnable seats, he told the Guardian.
“It’s a positive and bold measure. What they want from us at Operation Black Vote is to make the case for all-black shortlists. Partly it’s come from pressure within the organisation but also the fact that in the last four months the Labour party has broadly failed to select any number of BME [British minority ethnic] candidates from winnable seats. They are being outdone by the Tories,” Mr Woolley said. He is writing a paper for Ms Harman which he hopes will be ready in six weeks. [Via The Guardian]

Dreadful idea for so many reasons I hardly know where to start:

1 It says blacks are useless without a leg up
2 Don`t say they face racism , other disadvantaged people , like the poor , for example , do not get a free ride
3 The grandfathers of Caribbean blacks faced real racism but performed better in school than the relatively un-discriminated against, current crop. It is the fault of the black community which insists in a black identity and those jealous of their power who cherish the immunity of victim hood. Handy for Ken Livingstone a disaster for the country and the individuals.
4 It is unfair on whites not all whites, the white passed over.
5 It says the colour of your skin defines you when many blacks are beyond that now and desperate to escape from the constraints of their narrow ethnicity
6 What about mixed race people like my son and my wife are they black enough? Will you want a measurement of nose and lips?
7 Why? Who do they speak for? Can I speak for white people then?

The patronising misconceived wrong headedness can scarcely be exaggerated. There is only one ethnicity that matters in England and it is English. Others are incidental and harmless privately but cannot be set up in competition to the inclusiveness of free men and women meeting on equal terms in a tolerant but confident monoculture. Without the need of the left to boldly go and seek out new victims and make sure they stay that way this would all have been sorted a long time ago. Mixed race children are the fastest growing group in the UK. It sums up everything hypocritical about the Hydra headed left. 35 % of labour voters pick the BNP as their second choice BTW…you watch how careful they are about who stands where … you could not make it up

I thought this was disgusting. Vaz is a racist bigot.

Are Labour going to suggest all white shortlists in Ken and Chelsea?
No to all women shortlists too.

Old BE said...

ALL forms of discrimination are currently illegal and rightly so!

There is no "good" discrimination. And Philipa is right, in mostly white areas will there be representative shortlisting? Didn't think so.

The whole thing comes down to this illusion that "society" somehow prevents success in minorities which it does not. Big Government prevents success across the board.

I see N hardly any posting at all :-)

This such "initiative" is patronising in the extreme! It should just be quality, pure and simple. I dont think people should put "ethnicity" on application forms or on shortlists. I think they should be chosen solely on basis of merit, experience and suitability... how old fashioned...

Newmania said...

`xactly mermy. Just as you do not expect special treatment for being cute and blond eh ?

Bet you milk it to buggery

Hmn, having read this, should we also have shortlists based on sexuality as well as gender and race? Non-whites are underrepresented? OK, what about a homosexual only shortlist in....? What about a religious fanatics shortlist? Or do we already have those? What about a single mothers only shortlist in Kensington and Chelsea (knowing my luck it would be Bradford)

Ok this might sound a bit silly because the whole premise is silly.

What amazes me is the Vaz is actually trying to change the law, actually tabling a motion to make this racist idea of his legal. A big brown motion is exactly what I think this 'initiative' is.

Newms -

Oh, you're back! How wonderful to see you posting again.

You're absolutely spot on here, though I think I disagree (mildly) on the reason it's wrong. To me, it's wrong politically, rather than culturally.

It's no surprise to see it being suggested, is it. Back in the 1950's and early 1960's the Equal Rights Movement in the US based their arguments on human equality. That is, blacks should have political rights equal to those of whites because they are no less human beings as whites. But by the late 1960's/1970's, the argument had changed; blacks should have political rights as blacks. In other words, it was identity politics. What you've posted about is the logical outgrowth of that change in emphasis.

Thabnks for that Lud that is an interesting insight. That is escatly the sort of old fashioned thiming I was trying to nail

Exactly...and how about a deaf people's shortlist? And how about an oppressed ciggie smokers' short list?

Or how about a shortlist for those oppressed and robbed by Broon, Blair and nulab. We'd all be on that.

Or how about a shortlist for those deprived of a Referendum on the EU Constitutional Treat shortlist? We'd all be on that too. Though Harlow is unlikely be on it for much longer as we are in the process of trying to get a local referendum here.

And on the issue of these local referendums, I understand there are likely to be others in process elsewhere. Does anyone know of any others?

How about a short list with just you on it Flo. I`d vote for you

Unbelievable. Of all the possible typos in all the world, I have to go and do the following:

'EU Constitutional Treat shortlist'

Right now I'm for the orange people - those courageous hugely monks protesting for the, equally courageous people of Burma.

Please gid we see a miracle in Burma.

The situation in Burma tends to reinforce Einstein's view of religion:

"Being a lover of freedom, when the revolution came in Germany, I looked to the universities to defend it, knowing that they had always boasted of their devotion to the cause of truth; but, no, the universities immediately were silenced. Then I looked to the great editors of the newspapers whose flaming editorials in days gone by had proclaimed their love of freedom; but they, like the universities, were silenced in a few short weeks… Only the Church stood squarely across the path of Hitler’s campaign for suppressing truth. I never had any special interest in the Church before, but now I feel a great affection and admiration because the Church alone has had the courage and persistence to stand for intellectual truth and moral freedom. I am forced thus to confess that what I once despised I now praise unreservedly."

I reject racial discrimination, whether in its ugly traditional forms or in its newer guises as Affirmative Action quotas, preferential treatment for minority candidates by political parties, and all types of "diversity" rules. But this is the belief system -this obsession with the mantras of political correctness that unites the true Labour believers, from the Bennites to the Blairites.
They are far less concerned by the fact that there has just been the first run on a bank for 141 years; caused by the triumvirate of organisations he created being unable to act until it was too late. And as for the ticking bomb of consumer debt, the silence is deafeninf from Labour. The total level of consumer debt, including mortgages, is almost 1.3trillion quid, close to three times the level of borrowing when Labour first came to power. And the banks are starting to crack down on consumer credit. Two weeks ago, for example, HSBC said it would introduce annual reviews of all its customers' overdrafts, with cuts to many borrowers' overdraft limits likely to follow. It's all going to get very, very unpleasant...
NuLabour/Old Labour are also united in a belief that so long as the media continues to be suppine, the giro cheques keep coming in and more jobsworth uniforms are created to please the masses, trifles such as who happens to be running the country are an irrelevance for most people. Labour might be right...if the polls are to be believed.

Newmsie, congrats on your presence in the Top 100 of centre-right blogs chez Mr Dale. You ought to have been higher up the list. And why is "Bel is Thinking" merely in the 40s? More surprisingly, I crept in at number 84. I might just have to start blogging about politics again!

Newmania said...

I noticed that Stan , 84 is not bad since you have veered off towards ...um...human interest of late .I agree about Bel who i greatly enjoy and Hatfield girl deserves recognition as well. I don`t take it the tinest bit seriously though

Judging by your splendid comment which captures my mood you certainly should get back to politics. It is a bit dispiriting trying to compete with full timres , we need a Corinthian league .

Stan Bull said...

Yes. I'm reverting to politics...at least, in small doses. But not necessarily UK politics. I shall cast my eye futher afield.
*A number of the blogs listed in that Top 100 are, in fact, dead or moribund BTW.

There is a bit of a lack of world view comment except from a Liberal point of view.

*shivers*
Auntie Flo needs to stand immediately so I can vote for her instead.

1) being cute and blonde is not a political or a cultural issue. It's simply a matter of getting onto the bus when it's not at the bus stop, and getting taxi drivers to accept cheques.

2) There is discrimination - the Labour party distinctly chooses candidates based on their distance from the Thames. Give me five Labour front benchers who are from below the Watford Gap. THE SOUTH is under-represented, folks! We're being run by people who don't use the word "the" and for whom "Living room/front room" is just called t'room!!! THIS MUST BE STOPPED!!!!!

SOUTHERN CANDIDATES RIGHTS ACTION PARTY - SCRAP!!!!!

Phillipa you may do that but if you do I will never speak to you again , you shall go from this place and dwell in the land of nod alone ...or with the other socialists which is worse. BROWN!!!!! Gaaaah!

and getting taxi drivers to accept cheques.

Coo I thought that was a myth.Yes Labour have declared war on the South...if you haven`t beaten your wife you just dont get in

N - gotcha :-)

Seriously though I'm not a 'party man' and though I have conservative values, if another party adopts them and the Conservatives do not then I'll transfer my vote - they can call themselves any name they like as long as they do what I believe is the right thing. As it happens it seems that Broon has clotherd himself in the Bible in order to gain ground. That in my book is a big no-no.

But at least he's not out to persecute abandoned women like the amoral Cameron!

Newmania said...

Cameron is not about to pesecute abandoned women he is trying to support the family which badly needs it.

Hitler didn't persecute the Jews, gays or other immigrants, he just supported the Germans which badly needed it.

Pardon my grammar, I meant a race who themselves perceived that they badly needed it.
