Friends With a Woman ?

I noticed in the Standard under the editorial their was a vicious denial of the possibility the other day. In general I detect a new sense of bitter realism amongst men beleaguered with 1950s expectations but competing with women at work and usually losing . There were some telling phrases like ,” He just grew on me = Nothing better tuned up “. And a telling narrative of the shame of being introduced as a “chum to a prospective mate of the woman . What are you ... the court eunuch ?
I have always adopted a policy of being pretty up front about my admiration of a women extending to regions far beyond the cerebral . In fact personally, I increasingly find that physical attraction and an appreciation of a woman’s` mind are inextricably linked but then we always knew that body and mind were false categories really.
Personally I doubt its possible at least unless there are overwhelming reasons why the question of sex does not arise in the first place .

Or as Nora Ephron once put it, "In my sex fantasy, nobody ever loves me for my mind".

It's an age thing, newmania.

I'm mystified by my daughter (early 20s) and her young friends of the same age. Males and females have stop overs at each other's houses, sometimes two females and one male or two males and one female, in sleeping bags on a lounge floor - yet they don't have carnals.

The first time they stopped here, I was convinced that there had to be 'goings on' during the night and became so worried that I went round putting up notices about 'safe sex' and filling sweet bowls with condoms.

In the morning they all told me I was disgusting only people of my age would think that males an females sleeping together mean they're having sex.

I felt so stupid that I could only feebly whine, well I'm a mother and mothers worry...

I went to the Reading Festival with my daughter and a group of mixed male and female friends of hers one year. I stopped at a hotel while they shared a tent and got totally plastered - yet no sex!

weird, eh?

Flo goodness you have a daughter in her early 20s ... I would have guessed you were younger than that.
Bet you are still beautiful though.( and a child bride of course)

Yes very wierd , I`m dreadful if I `ve had afew drinks and I have to have this sort of Angel on my shoulder and it actually does feel like being Jeckyl and Hyde.
Jeckyl has always been triumphant. Do you know what I mean that sober voice that says " KNOW THIS , YOUR LIFE WILL BE OVER"

Just me then

Or unless you've had great sex, realised you should have just had great conversation and go back to the latter except that it can never be. I think you can have male friends but the frisson is always there. It depends whether loneliness, drink etc interfere.

Newmania said...

I was wondering if polygamy is the answer ,. What you need is a womna a few years older than you who interests you and a girl of about 23 for sex....

\oops I `ve lowered my own tone.

Loneliness and drink are pretty common commodities

You speak the weird truth Auntie Flo...I had six 17 year olds, 3 boys, three girls, all sleeping on the floor in the same room. No sex. Horrified that I should even imagine it.

Casual sex is soooooo last century.

Clearly, Ed!

Should be getting the 7 year itch about now then, Ed.

Like all good Christians, I am saving myself.

Actually, I found my childhood bible in a box earlier and felt mildly guilty - I don't think St. Paul would be proud of me...

You shouldn't read the Standard, Newmania...It will rot your mind.

They like to get women journalists to slag off feminism, single mothers etc etc. It is a pathetic waste of pulp.

Old fashioned is the look I'd get if some chap started frequenting the house on a friendly basis.

What's the point of other people who want to be regarded as unattractive?

Once (when I was in England) Mr HG was unnerved to find the woman who helped me in the house, not tall but equally wide, of a certain age, accompanied invariably by her sister-in-law equally strongly, nay robustly built, (who did a terrific job on the ironing while she chaperoned). And they were collected from work by one of their husbands.

Impossibly expensive, take it from me. Not that tried it myself, of course, but I have dabbled with serial monogamy and it's financially crippling.

And Broon's Presbie Victorian compass is intent on making us pay through the nose for every dalliance, even if we don't marry them.

Half of all we possess - what an outrage. I'd like to know how he intends to enforce this against bluebeards. He's bound to find a way to stealth tax dalliances too. Think I'll join the silver ring thing club.
