Yes, NM, it does have a rather pleasing feel to it, doesn't it?

Wipeout!

Of course the Conservative Party is the natural party of governance, but our drubbing in '97 showed the consequences of losing the moral high-ground.

As further tales of fraud, sleaze, corruption, malpractice and misadministration amongst Labour councils in London and elsewhere surface over the next three years, we stand a good chance of wiping the virus of socialism from the municipal map of England.

It's an excellent springboard for Labour to go on and win the next General Election.

Hmm, I voted Conservative for the first time on Thursday, mainly because the Lib Dems f*cked up Bournemouth something rotten - Conservatives do tend to be better councillors.

But will this result be replicated in a general election? I'm not so sure, if you scratch the "Cameron effect" veneer will it still be the same story underneath?

The Conservatives would very unwise to think that the next election is "in the bag" - they've still a way to go to completely win people over.

yes, that does look nice. Don;t extend your mortgage too much though!

It would be nice to think that the Nu Lab 'project' was dead - what was the voter turnout like ?

Like Frobisher, I feel that the PC elite will remain at the controls regardless.

Mmm,

Whilst the Conservatives did well, it was not that unexpected, these were seats in which they would do well anyway in such circumstances with even a moderate swing. Maybe CCO will realise this, but I suspect yet again hubris will lead to nemesis.

As I said to others blogs, This reminds me of Neil Kinnock and Labour between 1988-91, where every local election had a good result for Labour, led in the polls leading upto the 1992 election for most of the preceding 18 months and then lost.

I wonder how much the, 'were're comfortable' factor will influence voters, especially if a boom is engineered by Brown prior to an election. Moreover, when individual questions are asked in polls, such as 'Who do you trust on?' or, 'Who is better at?' the Conservative lead is much smaller in some areas than what it should be, which was Labour's issue 15-20 years ago.

It will boil down to the economy. I am not a fan of Brown's inflationary neo Keynesian crap, but many people are now employed in the public sector, or rely on the public sector for employment than was the case 10 years and self interest, as we saw in the 1970s, rules the roost at election time. The Conservatives need to be very smart about this and, to be honest, I am not sure whether George Osbourne is smart enough to do so. There are others, however, that could...

The problem with Cameron and a General Election is that if I can see a 101 issues that he could be tackled on in a general election, then I am sure the people at Millbank work for New Labour will see 1001.

Later,

Dunc.

Hi James yes it does .

Raedders , I think the main pijntis that the Labour Party are in denial if you look in theleft wing pressor listen to any of them they do not ubderstand that there core beliefs are as unpopular as they were ten years ago and as we have recently seen there is no challenge to the orthdioxy in the Party.

As they do not change the voter will feel rebufed and dismiss them . They may even feel they need a period in opposition to relect

EK don’t be such a cynic . Obviously in a democracy the majority or v=central position will prevail and quite right to . It is up to everyone to move it along right which I `m sure nuice Mr. Cameron intends to do.

Frobisher you have made a decision you will never regret . Welcome to a band of brothers a circle of friends and a support for your every dream . Try to betray us now and we hunt you down and shoot you like a dog … ha ha but I `m sure that won’t happen ha ha ha ( I `m serious thought )

CU I `m really confident as I say because of the deluding inward looking stuff emnanating from the Labiur Party

JJ ha ha I just sold an over priced hovel and it feels good .
( As do you I have no doubt)

Duncan I `m in two minds as to whether to simply delete your stuff and ignore you . I `ll spare you the shame of your ignominious past but consider yourself unwelcome but suffered.

Moderate swing ? This result would be a sixty seat majority , that will do . Harriet Harman has been saying the sort of thing you do ,. The figures look bad but me feeling is …..etc. Inevitable and about the weakest gloss I can imagine . The last poll that I saw showed the Conservatives further ahead on individual issues than overall . You are right though that Brown does get a high competence rating for the economy which I confess is a worry . Or rather it was until the economy began to show the signs of creaking which was inevitable given the supply side damage of the last ten years and the vast borrowing . I had supposed that with interest out of the governments hands an engineered boom would be problematical but why not come to think of it .
The rest of what you say has already been discussed ad nauseum really but it is crucial issue of course
( I think they have noticed).

EK I must have a look

anon they probably work for the state which as the New Statesman was proudly boasting is better paid than its private opposite numbers now.I get incandescent with moral repugnance when I hear teachers and the like claim the moral high ground when they are voting for their employer.
