Fried Chicken

I am accustomed to thinking of Dizzy as a powy zowy nowy kinda guy and myself as a hopeless old ,“ The Rolling Who ?” chap. I am shocked therefore at his admission of ignorance . He claims to be unaware of an ..."American stereotype that all black people eat fried chicken
His post is about a silly spat over a KFC advert and he is right of course , still , 'News' that black people like Fried chicken ? Methinks he protests too much. Come on Dizzy what next ..."Would you allow your servants to ingest this fried comestible ?" Of course " there is a stereo-type" ..that blacks love the fried chicken ..tuck into this family bucket of non PC fun and learn what goes down on the streets old man ...

Love it myself and should you wish to start your own faux KFC , here are the rules of the game

It's not just a stereotype in American. A particularly nasty piece of work I met on my travels wouldn't shut up about the number of chicken shops in certain parts of Saaf London.

You know I hate PC with a vengeance, Newms, and I feel pig sick that the following may sound horribly PC, but I do think there's a certain derogatory affinity between this thing about black people and KFC and the stories that Americans in the south live on moon pies and the stories about northern Englanders frying Mars bars. It also underlies the gastronomic snobbish nastiness of the French in denigrating English food and calling the English; Les Rosbief, or however they spell it.

There's an underlying denial of intellect with a horrible undercurrent of nationalist or regional one-upmanship to these stories. I'm a patriot and love my country despite the damage that Brown and New Labour have done to it - which I don't believe is terminal, by the way, we survived the WW2, we can survive New Labour - but there's no denying that the dark side of nationalism is a vile, racist evil, which is exactly what the Nazis exploited.

Perhaps we only have the right to get mad as hell, as I do, about the French digging up war graves given - in perpetuity - to British soldiers who gave their lives to save the French and much of Europe and even madder about the times those war graves have been smashed and daubed with "Go home les rosbief" and other such nationalist insults, to our veterans and so, unless we are prepared to think about the vile nationalist stuff some of us British can be guilty of.

A speech of Shami Chakrabarti's says it all for me on this, she spoke poignantly and movingly about being heartbroken as a child to be called a Paki. It's really not the same as calling someone a Brit, Shami said, because being called a Brit can be a mark of pride as well as a racist slur, being called a Paki is only ever derogatory and largely racist. And she is right, there is a distinct difference in meaning between the two terms.

Do you think I'm taking the KFC jibes too seriously? I don't know, perhaps I am.

I think it's prob a function of geography too (think of N/S war) as everywhere I went in the South served fried chicken and corn bread. It was yummy.
