Comment 1 ( Dale )

Iain; with the sort of Poll lead Cameron now has ( In both DT and Guardian today) .The fear will grow that Cameron will betray his core support which he knows is stacked up in safe seats anyway. This was always part of the strategy.
33% of the vote got us 198 seats and 37% of the vote got Labour 356 seats so its obvious that Cameron wanted different voters as much as new voters. We knew that and put up with it when he insulted Margaret Thatcher by implicitly criticising her relationship with the US on the anniversary of 9.11 early on. ( I recall your dismay )

We have listened to warnings of "Tax rises" .Spending ‘increases’ in the NHS and promises to match Brown’s lunatic spending plans .We and read articles in the Guardian by Oliver Letwin , and others , banging on about Progressive ideals .We have looked on bewildered as a Guardian Editorial backed the Conservative Party and watched a style makeover that assumes modern is the same thing as "Liberal". After so many years of appearing to be irrelevant ( only an appearance ) Conservatives will put up with a lot but there has to be a walk away deal breaker .

I am not certain I see this as Europe where I feel Cameron has the right instinct . I am concerned about what will happen to “Sharing the proceeds of growth” when there is none .If the position is as it appears to be then rightish and even moderate Conservatives must start reminding Cameron that they cannot betaken for granted and that without us he has nothing.

What Iain is the point of a tax raising Brown level spending pro Europe progressive Conservative Victory . Wheeler may be an arse, I `ll take your word for it , but Anyone But Brown cannot be the whole story. One way of reminding Cameron and his patrician chums of this might be to vote UKIP in the Europeans elections but Conservative in the GE.

Do you really think Cameron is just Blair?
Tony and Gordon started off, committed to being more Tory than the Tories, yet ended up a traditional tax and spend and over spend socialist basket case.

Won't Cameron move onto his agenda slowly, once the voters are reassured that the Howard days are over?

Giving him a UKIP spanking is a high risk strategy.

Have you not been listening to the small print N? Cameron is "applying conservative values to the modern world". The last thing the party needs now is the EU-nutters coming back to the fore to spoil it. As a UKIPPER on Dale points out, what have the UKIP MEPs actually done in their time? The reason to vote Tory at the EU elections is to add to the momentum that the party will form the next UK government. Majorities are formed when voters know who will get in next time, swing voters vote for who will win not who has the best nano-policies on the herbal medicines directive.

BQ- I could, not bring myself to do it personally out of sheer habit and dislike of change.

BE- I daresay you are right but we are going a very long way left and for what purpose I am not sure

As a well-known and respected commentator, N, you have to be a bit careful about putting nonsense on the interweb!

Funnily enough, I was thinking of voting Green in the Euro elections, to point out to the Liberal Democrats that they have to keep the "libertarians" in check & start taking the environment seriously.

I also appreciate the fact that they tend to take a more EU-critical approach. (yes, I have the same view as you on Europe, if little else). Different mentality to the 'kippers but quite a similar approach: sending a message to the party we identify with that they represent us, not own us.

Parties don't have a right anyone's support, they've got to earn it. If we were still in the days of your dad & grandad telling you where to put my x I'd be voting ZNL...

The Tories want to get elected and under our electoral system that means moving to the centre. I don't get the impression that there is a great deal of enthusiasm for some of the loopy nonsense posted on blogs like conservativeHome, although I'm sure that is still what many Tory activists believe.
