This weekend she was on Desert Island Discs and recounted the strangely moving circumstances surrounding her admission to her mother that she was a Lesbian. Her mother suffered stroke which immobilized her for seven years before she finally died. Her illness appeared to be a direct consequence of the shock her daughter’s sexuality was to her.
Miriam said:“ I regret it now because it caused the person I loved the most pain...I should have been aware that to tell her was wrong...”
Attitudes to homosexuality have obviously changed beyond recognition since 1967 but what interests me is how complex people and love are. There is a great illusion abroad that in relationships ,and indeed society ,we should seek perfection at all costs , that things must be ‘right’ .In reality the invisible threads that bind us may be too delicate for such a cold wind The imperfect may well be “As good as it gets” .

you are right Mr Mania
the older I get (stop laughing at the back) the more value I place on pleasantness, smiles and simple civility in relationships
Thankyou Mr. Drew and Convivial Greetings to Mr. Blue Eyes
I am very suspicious Mr N!
What I admired was her comment about telling her mother - "it was an indulgence of me to tell her that".
How often do we all take ill-considered and self-indulgent steps? In my case, far too often.
Unsworth I also noticed that
Agreed Mr. Mania.
After reading Nick Drew's comment I feel terribly sorry for Peter Hitchens.
Life was more civilized before this mania came in of bringing everything out into the open. CF the common line in the soaps: "We need to talk". No we don't.

Always so much bang per syllable in your comments LBS ! I treasure them.I also run from the room if a soap is on
Very sad, I agree. However, it was rather OTT of Miriam's mother to go and have a stroke in response to her daughter trusting her with the truth. So OTT in fact that I wonder if the mother was due for a stroke anyway and the additonal stress just hastened it.
I think that must be so Flo.
