Re-animated Dodos

And there off ! The long wind up to the independence referendum has started with the SNP`s white Paper. The white paper outlines three options:-

1. Stick with the current devolved settlement
2. Enhance devolution by extending the powers of the Scottish Parliament in specific areas
3. Full independence
Scottish Conservatives rejected a referendum on these options out of hand and I have been thinking about the increasing absurdity of their position.
Sadly the Conservative Party in Scotland is down to irreducible core and it is wedded to the Union in a way that the rest of the Conservative Party is not. It is not English Conservatives that have changed other than with time. It is the Scottish Conservative Party that is now utterly unrepresentative of main stream Conservative thought .This is why they embarrass themselves and us by allying with Labour to further gerrymander against the interests of the English. Brown has signalled that he is once again going to devolve further powers to Scotland. He can do this under existing legislation and without ever having to go near the “constitution” a trick he is becoming alarmingly good at..hmmmmm? There will be no question of the English being consulted, they will merely be further discriminated against.

Scottish Conservatives represent no-one but a fossilised remnant, an angel beating its wings in a vacuum. As a lover of lost and hopeless causes I sympathise but that they cannot to continue to hippity hop about , like re-animated Dodos making an anachronistic spectacle of themselves.

What's a boy to do!

As for Scotland, the key consequence of devolution appears to be, as Anthony Howard has pointed out that ‘…The internal politics of both Scotland and Wales now resemble those of most Continental countries more than they resemble the English. The voters do not directly elect a government. They create circumstances in which the political parties negotiate to decide which of them will form the government….’ Whatever the future outcome of the SNP’s performance in government, and apparently scots are pretty satisfied so far, it is now the case that Labour's 50-year electoral dominance of Scotland has come to an abrupt end. A welcome development for us.
Clearly, London will be under considerable pressure to accede to the wishes of the members of the Scottish Parliament for greater powers. It should be noted though that UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has repeatedly declared that the Scottish Parliament should focus on how "existing powers" were best used rather than on shifting more powers to Edinburgh. The potential for confict between London and Edinburgh on the issue of increasing the powers of the Scottish Parliament clearly remains very, very high. Happy days for us...

Thats the key , so he does not have to further antagonise the english . In other words further devolution without us being asked again

Flo probably has a strained finger after her rather magnificent anti airport posts.

Hope she comes back !!

Flo's not skedaddled. I'm on leave at present. Been out doing some research on the stunning Dengie peninsular - before nulab destroy it.

I've been wondering what happened to the lunatic plans that B-ruin's Treasury, the RSPB, English
Nature, English Wilderness and B-ruin's regional Stasi came up with in 2005 for kicking farms off the Dengie and REWILDING' 700,000 TO 800,000 hectares of reserves and theme parks there for extinct wildlife.

I kid you not, see the Essex chronicle of November 2005 for a report of their chilling plans.

The idea, as I recall, was for a network of such ecological reserves across UK and the EU, the network mindbogglingly INTERLINKED by trans-European wildlife, stampede corridors - with a rather strange slant on 'wild' and 'stampede'.

For some reason best known only to themselves (think 1000s of hectares of farmland released for massive housing development), the above were twitting around with the lunatic notion of reinstating wildlife which had been extinct in UK for a 800- 1000 years and giving it the run of the Dengie ande other similar areas.

The Dengie wild game reserves/English Safari theme parks were to have herds, or whatever the correct term is, of elks, wild boars, beavers, aurochs (wild cattle), reindeer etc. The idea being that these reserves would act as both leisure areas (to replace all the children's playgrounds stolen for development?) and low maintenance food production areas where the food would effectively produce itself.

Wildlife geeks, who've always preferred animals to humans, were fantasising about having wolves and brown bears there too and considering how to deal with the 'Elk & Safety' issues when wild lynx began moving into the areas to hunt the reindeer herds.

I bet they were going to clone these critters to - gawd help us. You can see where all this was leading - nulab's very own Jurassic Park with lynx and wolves instead of T Rex.

It was such a hot issue for nulab a few years ago, yet I can find very little of the stuff that was on the internet about this now so perhaps they've given up the idea. If so, thank God.

However, silence from nulab - and wiping all trace of a proposal from the internet - could simply mean that they're secretly going at it like Billy'O. Anyway, I'm having a sniff around for Elks etc while I'm there.

Well said, n. The stupidity of the Scottish Conservatives is shocking. They're are sorely deluded if they think that burying their heads in Scotch mist like this wil make the yearning of the proud Scots for Independence go away. You're right, they are an anachronism - and bloody embrassing eltists too. Have the past 150 years of deomocratisation passed gthem by completely? Independence is inevitable.

We must do everything we can to support our Scots cousins to attain their proud and rightful destiny.

I think we should all help Alex Salmond to get his wish of freeing Scotland from the English tyranny,by helping him we free ourselves from the Scots tyranny we English have in the HofC, yes the Scot Cons are Dodo's.

Not impressed Mr N. I am a member of the Conservative and Unionist party, as are you. The Lion in the North has given us any number of outstanding Conservatives, including Prime Ministers.

I would accept a Bavarian solution whereby the Scots Tories have a semi-detached organisation, but anything that would see our ideological kin North of the Border cut loose and left to the tender mercies of the three left wing parties up there would be beyond shameful.
